Somaliland government bans left hand driven cars

Hargeisa (SD) – The 66th session of the Somaliland cabinet held in the form of a video conference chaired by the President of Somaliland, Mr. Muse Bihi Abdi, a report was presented to the Minister of Interior of Somaliland, and after a long discussion safety of used vehicles in the country.

The Council discussed amendments and supplements to the Somaliland Traffic Law, Law No. 56/2013, and the key issues discussed included Transportation management system and registration.

A committee previously appointed by the council to advice on the use of left-handed cars in the country, shared their report on how to address the left-handed cars and other vehicles that don’t have a lot of societal benefits, they noted that in the last ten months of 2020, more than 8,628 vehicles entered the country, most of which were of no value to the community.

After a long discussion and analysis the council decided that no left-hand vehicles should not be brought into Somaliland, to match the country’s Vehicles and the road lanes of the country.

The council also decided to stop importing socially unproductive small cars in to the country, especially Vitz vehicles.
