Hargeisa (SD) – The members of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Somaliland have approved amendments and supplements to the Rape and related sexual violence of Law No. 78/2020.

The session was chaired by the chairman of the council, Mr. Bashe Mohamed Farah. The members of the House of Representatives voted unanimously to amend the Rape and other sexual violence of Law No. 78/2020.

Forty-five MPs were present for the vote today,30 MPs voted for it, 9 MPs rejected, while 5 abstained and the Speaker did not vote, the bill was passed.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives did not comment on the rape law passed today.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Bashe Mohamed Farah did not elaborate what the amendments were and the its need.

Somaliland, just like the countries in the region has a rape problem and its not clear if an amendment will curtail the practice.
