Somaliland president slams United Nations for politicizing development programs

Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has accused the United Nations of taking orders from the Somali government and are engaging in the regional politics.

Speaking at the Kulmiye party’s central committee meeting, which opened today, Muse Bihi said UN envoy to Somalia James Swan does not represent Somaliland, but welcomed anyone who “respectfully” wanted to work with them.

“In recent years, non-political organizations, including the United Nations, and many self-proclaimed charities that raise money from taxpayers in their home countries, say they are helping the needy, these institutions have in recent years acted politically to the detriment of Somaliland’s sovereignty, they comply with and follow the orders of Villa Somalia, a government they prop up and fund, It is not possible for Somaliland to follow those orders.” Said president Bihi.

The president of Somaliland said that it is necessary for his administration to identify the needs in Somaliland and plan the projects to be implemented by the said organizations or else they do not want the support.

In a recent cabinet meeting, Somaliland issued an order suspending UN agencies from operating in Somaliland, “until a solution is found”.
