Somaliland: Waddani Party Dismisses Vehicle Insurance as Illegal

Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland’s largest opposition Party Waddani, described the law ordering large vehicles to take out insurance as illegal.

Wadani party social affairs secretary Mohamed-sidiq Dhamme said that the demand violates the country’s constitution.

“The truck insurance company monopolistic demand is unconstitutional, it violates the principles of the free market and the economic system of the country according to Article 11 of the Constitution of the Republic of Somaliland which warns against creating economic strata and private interests in the country.” Said Dhamme.

Adding “As there is no national insurance law, the only thing that requires a citizen to take action is a legal law. It has no enforcement and cannot be enforced and there is no legal basis for the decision of the chairman of the insurance agency.”

Owners of transport trucks have complained about the Edict, which they say puts a heavy financial burden on them.

Somaliland recently announced an Edict demanding that owners of large transport vehicles commuting between Ethiopia and Somaliland to get insurance, after the country’s insurance agency secured a deal with an Ethiopian counterpart.
