The IFJ has urged the Somali government to reconsider the Official Information Bill

MOGADISHU (SD)-The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has urged the Somali government to reconsider the Official Information Bill (OIB), stating that such laws could impact the right to information.

According to IFJ, this legislation significantly conflicts with international standards, including the African Union Model Law on Access to Information and the Somali provisional constitution.

The unclear legal provisions could obstruct accountability and undermine the trust that Somalia can build with international partners, which would impede progress in governance and economic stability, the IFJ statement said.

Tim Dawson, Deputy General Secretary of IFJ, stated that the Official Information Law, as it stands, poses a significant threat to freedom of information and the governance of Somalia.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) also issued a statement emphasizing that the proposed legislation could undermine the establishment of comprehensive policies, thus weakening the fundamental values of democracy and the effectiveness of the rule of law.
