The United Nations Security Council Approves the AU’s new mission, AUSSOM

NY (SD) – The United Nations Security Council is meeting today to discuss the security situation in Somalia and to deliberate on the new mission, AUSSOM, which will begin in 2025.

The Council voted by majority on establishing and structuring the new mission as the current mandate of ATMIS (African Union Transition Mission in Somalia) is set to expire on December 31 of this year.

The draft resolution, which the Security Council approved, is led and managed by the United Kingdom. Preliminary reports indicate that 12,626 troops, including 1,040 police officers, will be deployed in Somalia starting January 1 of the new year.

The new mission, AUSSOM, is expected to deploy its forces in Somalia until June 30, 2025.

Today’s meeting will also included the participation of representatives from Somalia and Ethiopia. It has been confirmed that troops from Djibouti, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Egypt will participate in the new mission.

Furthermore, reports suggest that Ethiopia will not be reintegrated into the mission despite the resolution of the recent tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia, which was mediated in Ankara.
