UN Office in Somalia provides election materials to Puntland and Jubaland

Mogadishu (SD) – Electoral Implementation Committees of Jubaland and Puntland States has on Wednesday received electoral equipment and materials necessary in holding elections in the two administrations.

UNSOM offices in Kismayo and Garowe have handed over the equipment to the Jubaland and Puntland Electoral Commissions, including ballot boxes for the upcoming elections for the country’s Upper House of Parliament.

The Federal and State Election Implementation Committees are in final preparation for holding elections for the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, which will take place on the 25th of this month.

The commissions thanked UNSOM for providing the equipment and said that the ballot boxes will be used for the election of the members of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia.

Puntland’s parliament is set to reconvene on Thursday to appoint a committee to oversee the upper house elections, while the Jubaland parliament this week appointed their committee, announcing that the Upper House elections will be held on the 25th of this month, and that they are ready to hold the elections.

Somalia’s upper house elections are the first of the country’s long awaited elections.
