UNSOM: Women’s representation can change the political landscape in Somalia

MOGADISHU-The United Nations commends Somali women, on International Women’s Day, for their vigorous efforts and tremendous contribution to advocating peace, political stability, and progress in the country.

In a released press statement from UNSOM on International Women’s Day, James Swan, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia reported, “Somali women have shown bravery, resilience and unwavering resolve to ensure gender equality and full participation of women in all spheres of life.”

“I commend Somali women’s active role and advocacy in the ongoing federal electoral process to achieve the minimum 30 per cent quota for women. Women’s representation can change the political landscape in Somalia, making it more inclusive and pluralist,” added James Swan.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated throughout the world since 1975, with the theme of this year being ‘Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow.’ The day commemorates a call to action for accelerating gender equality. The press statement by UNSOM, urges the government of Somalia to help advance women’s participation in the political developments in the country.

“It is vital that Somali women are given their fair share in politics, as well as in economic and social development. It is important that their contributions are recognized together with their rightful place in leadership and decision-making in peace and political progressions.”

The United Nations in Somalia recognizes the incredible efforts and contribution of Somali women over the years and compels all Somali stakeholders, mainly the country’s leaders, to ensure greater presence, voice, and participation of women in all national and state-level bodies to apprehend and sustain peace and growth in Somalia.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated around the world since 1975, to celebrate women’s achievements in social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
