FESOJ: Press Freedom is Now Under Great Pressure in Somaliland

Mogadishu(SD)-The federation of Somali Journalist held a press conference in Mogadishu detailing the dire situation Somaliland journalist are operating under.

The federation talked about the Hadhwanaag News reporters in Mogadishu after fleeing their homeland due to Government pressure.

“The trio Abdirizak Good Nur, Director of Hadhwanaag Media, the editor Abdikani Abdullahi Ahmed and Abdirahman Shiekh Hassan are currently being hosted by FESOJ.” was said in a press release by FESOJ.

The head of FESOJ and the displaced Hadhwanaag News reporters at the press conference spoke to the harsh treatment of Journalist by the Somaliland government.

“We have lost all the space to work freely, within our rights in the law, and that is the main reason that forced us to flee from Somaliland” Abdirizak Good Nuur said.

FESOJ leaders directly appealed to president Muse Bihi in alleviating the harsh treatment of journalist in Somaliland.

We request Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, to release detained journalists in Somaliland, to allow the banned media stations to resume broadcasting with immediate effect and without any form of hindrance or restrictions. Freedom of media is enshrined in Somaliland’s constitution and all the applicable international human rights laws. It is the obligation of the government not to suppress the media”. Mohamed Ibrahim Moalimuu, the Secretary General of Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) said in the press conference.

Hadhwanaag News is currently blocked in Somaliland and it’s journalists on the run, due to publishing an opinion piece detailing alleged corruption by Somaliland’s central Bank Governor Ali Ibrahim Baghdadi.
