Hargeisa(SD)-The international community supporting Somaliland’s democratic system is sending a delegation to the capital of Hargeisa.
The delegation, which is expected to be led by the EU representative, is due to travel Hargeisa to mediate the Somaliland President and the opposition parties, due to the sides disagreeing on the selection of the electoral commission by the president.
The two members are Abdirashid Mohamud Ali (Riyor’a), who is accused of being a member of the Kulmiye Central Committee and Kaltuun Sheikh Hassan, whom the opposition considers to be members of the preveous Election Commission.
The delegation led by Ambassador Nicolas Berlanga, is expected to meet with the president and opposition leaders pushing to reach a solution on the challenges facing the new election committee, which includes conducting large-scale local and representatives elections.
The Wadani opposition party sent a complaint to the international community supporting Somaliland’s democratic system regarding members of the President’s nomination committee, with Wadani suspending and rescinding their electoral commission member.
The EU ambassador had previously mediated between the Somaliland President and the opposition on the formation of a new electoral commission, which had previously been contested by both parties.
However, it will be the second time the EU envoy has to mediate between the President and opposition leaders in two months.
