Jubaland and Puntland boycott debt relief conference, as DF faces challenge

Garowe (SD) – Puntland Ministry of Finance has issued a letter indicating they will not be attending Somalia’s debt-rescheduling meeting to take place between 7-11 March.

The Puntland Ministry of Finance has requested a month-long postponement of the conference, as it is preoccupied with holding the ‘Puntland Consultation Conference on March 15’ in Garowe.

A statement from Jubaland state’s ministry of finance said that they will not be attending the federal government of Somalia’s meeting with the regional finance ministries in Baidoa.

Jubaland said they would not attend the meeting after seeing that the federal government is imposing sanctions on their people and that their officials are mistreated at Mogadishu airport.

Puntland and Jubaland’s boycott could hinder Somalia’s debt consolidation efforts, as the requirements set by the international community on the federal government include working with regional governments.
