U.S. Embassy in Djibouti Issues an Alert for Today’s Planned Demonstrations

Djibouti (SD) – The US Embassy in Djibouti has issued a warning to citizens living in Djibouti, in a press release today.

The US Embassy said in a statement that citizens should not go to these Gathering points may include, but are not limited to, the following neighborhoods in Djibouti City, Djibouti:

• PK12
• Hayablay
• Balbala Adi
• Cheikh Moussa
• Stade Gouled

The rally in Djibouti today is in response to the arrest and torture of army pilot Fuad Yusuf Ali whose he is currently detained in a jail in Djibouti.

“Opposition parties have called for demonstrations against the Government of Djibouti on June 12, 2020. Recent protests have encountered a strong security force presence. U.S. government personnel are advised to avoid those areas throughout the day”. Said the US Statement.

The US government, which has a military base in Djibouti, offers its citizens the following advice:

• Avoid large crowds and demonstrations
• Use vigilance during your movements around Djibouti city
• Keep a low profile
• Notify friends and family of your safety
• Be aware of your surroundings
• Carry proper identification, including a U.S. passport with a current Djiboutian visa.

The Djibouti government did not issued a response to the US statement and protests that are planned to take place in the country today.
