25 Democratic senators call for immediate ceasefire in the Middle East

Washington (SD) – More than 25 U.S. senators have called for an immediate ceasefire to end the Palestinian and the Jewish conflict.

“To prevent any further loss of civilian life and to prevent further escalation of conflict in Israel and the Palestinian territories, we urge an immediate ceasefire,” the senators wrote in a joint statement.

The call for a ceasefire came after Jewish shelling caused heavy casualties on Sunday.

“Israel has the right to defend itself from Hamas’ rocket attacks, in a manner proportionate with the threat its citizens are facing,” they said. “As a result of Hamas’ rocket attacks and Israel’s response, both sides must recognize that too many lives have been lost and must not escalate the conflict further. We are encouraged by reports that the parties are exploring a ceasefire. We hope that this ceasefire can be reached quickly and that additional steps can be taken to preserve a two-state future.”

The call for a ceasefire is being spearheaded by Jewish senators.

Recent reports from the White House indicate that President Biden has now backed the ceasefire efforts.

“The president expressed his support for a ceasefire and discussed U.S. engagement with Egypt and other partners towards that end,” the White House said in a statement. The White House said Biden “encouraged Israel to make every effort to ensure the protection of innocent civilians” and that the two leaders “discussed progress in Israel’s military operations against Hamas and other terrorist groups in Gaza.”

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 212 Palestinians have been killed in the week of airstrikes, including 61 children and 36 women, with more than 1,400 people wounded. Ten people in Israel, including a five-year-old boy and a soldier, have been killed in the ongoing rocket attacks launched by Palestinian militants from civilian areas in Gaza toward civilian areas in Israel.

The deadly fighting has entered its eighth day as the international community mourns the disproportional loss of Palestinian lives.
