MOGADISHU (SD) -At least 60 people have died in Somalia due to the cholera outbreak that began three months ago, as stated by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Close to 5000 cases of cholera have been reported during this period, with 60 fatalities recorded, according to the latest report released by UNICEF in Mogadishu.
Of the reported cases, 2,503 were women, highlighting the vulnerability of women to cholera.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of reported cases this year is more than three times higher than the figures for the past three years.
The World Health Organization also reports that out of the 2,940 cases, were children under the age of five.
The cholera outbreak is believed to have been triggered by the El Niño weather phenomenon in 2023, which claimed the lives of at least 118 people and affected 1.2 million others.
