Mogadishu May 23, 2023 (SD) – The African Command of the United States (AFRICOM) has confirmed that significant casualties have been inflicted on the extremist group Al-Shabaab in the town of Jilib, located in the Middle Jubba region.
A statement issued by AFRICOM indicates that the operation was conducted in support of the Federal Government of Somalia, with no civilian casualties reported as a result of the airstrikes.
“In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, AFRICOM conducted an airstrike against the al-Shabaab militant network in Somalia on May 20, 2023.” said AFRICOM.
Furthermore, Somali government sources have reported that the Somali National Army, supported by international partners, launched an offensive against Al-Shabaab in the city of Jilib, which is known to be an Al-Shabaab stronghold.
The operation, which included ground assaults and airstrikes, resulted in heavy casualties, material damages, and the destruction of enemy positions, according to the government sources.
