AFRICOM issues statement on shelling in Bay region

Djibouti (SD)- A statement from the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) in Djibouti provided details of a recent airstrike in Bay region.

A statement from AFRICOM said that US forces, in collaboration with Somali forces, carried out airstrikes in Bula Falay, on the border between Bay and Lower Shabelle.

“This strike in Buulo Fulaay combined with recent strikes, shows our resolve and degrades al-Shabaab’s ability to threaten Somalia and its neighbors, side by side with our partners, we plan to leave no safe place for al-Shabaab to hide.” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Dagvin Anderson, Joint Task Force – Quartz commander.

The attack reportedly killed an al-Shabaab official, although his name was not released.

AFRICOM who was previously blamed for civilian deaths as a result of their operations in Somalia, confirmed no civilian casualties in their latest strike.

“Initial assessments indicate the strike killed one al-Shabaab personnel and destroyed one compound.” Said AFRICOM statement.

The United States, which recently withdrew its troops from Somalia, continues to target al-Shabab strongholds, and has carried out two strikes in the new year.
