AFRICOM releases its 2020 report on operations in Somalia

Djibouti (SD) – The US military’s Africa Command (AFRICOM) has announced the official number of airstrikes in Somalia this year.

AFRICOM said in a statement that it had carried out 46 airstrikes in Somalia over the past eight months, targeting al-Shabab strongholds.

“U.S. Africa Command continues to train Somali forces and support operations with precision airstrikes. In 2020, U.S. Africa Command has conducted 46 airstrikes to degrade the Al-Shabaab terrorist network.” Said AFRICOM.

AFRICOM Command’s issued statement did not include the number of civilian casualties in this year’s airstrikes in Somalia, although there were civilian casualties, according to Human Rights Watch.

The Somali Federal military and U.S. drones target al-Shabab strongholds in Somalia, some of which cause civilian losses.
