Mogadishu April 19, 2023 (SD) – A fierce battle erupted today in Budbud district in Galgaduud region between the Somali National Army and Al-Shabaab militants.
According to reports, the fighting began after Al-Shabaab militants launched a surprise attack using explosive-laden vehicles on Somali government troops in Budbud district.
The clashes were described as intense and involving both sides using heavy weapons, with both sides suffering heavy losses.
It is reported that Colonel Saney Abdulle and MP Mohamed Abukar Jaffar were among the government officials who were in Budbud to coordinate the military operations.
Somali government troops based in Budbud are said to have been heavily reinforced after the initial attack and have bushed back Al-Shabaab.
Local media reports suggest that Al-Shabaab militants suffered heavy losses in the battle and were forced to withdraw from the area.
The conflict has caused significant damage to both sides, and many people have been displaced as a result of the fighting.
The Somali government has not issued an official statement on the situation, but Al-Shabaab leader Abdi Assis Abu Musab claimed that his forces had launched a successful attack on government forces in Budbud.
“The Mujahideen forces today, on Wednesday, 28 Ramadan 1444H, after conducting an attack on a military base recently established by the DF forces in the Budbud area of Galcad district, Galgaduud region, have successfully taken control of the base. The attack, which resulted in significant casualties and damage to the enemy. By the grace of Allah, the Mujahideen forces were able to raise the flag of the righteous believers at the Budbud base. Significant losses and injuries were on the enemy side, including the destruction of many vehicles and military equipment, and some were captured. We will provide more information later, God willing.” Abu Musab said in a statement.
