MOGADISHU (SD)-The African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has announced that it has initiated an investigation into a fatal incident that occurred in the Buulo Mareer district on July 17, 2024. The incident resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to another.
ATMIS acknowledged the allegations that its forces may have accidentally killed civilians and promised to conduct a thorough investigation, with the results to be released upon completion.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. ATMIS troops are trained to adhere strictly to International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights standards, and Operational Guidelines governing military operations, with a focus on protecting civilians and children,” stated ATMIS in a press release.
The investigation comes in response to reports that Ugandan troops serving with ATMIS were involved in the killing of three civilians—farmers residing in the Buulo Mareer area of the Lower Shabelle region, approximately 120 km south of the capital, Mogadishu.
The incident has sparked protests in both Buulo Mareer and Mogadishu, with demonstrators calling for justice for those responsible. The bodies of the deceased have been transported to Mogadishu, and it is reported that they have not yet been buried.
ATMIS assured the public that the investigation will be comprehensive and impartial, and appropriate measures will be taken based on the findings.
