Ethiopia’s Somali and Afar regions sign a peace deal

MOGADISHU (SD) -The Presidents of Ethiopia’s Somali and Afar regions have announced that a formal agreement has been reached to end the longstanding conflict between the two areas.

Negotiations between the leaders of these regions over the past few days culminated yesterday afternoon with the signing of an official agreement to halt the conflict that had caused significant bloodshed in recent times.

President of the Somali Regional State, Mustafe Cagjar, and President of the Afar Regional State, Awal Arba, who spoke about the agreement, emphasized the need to address the root causes of the clashes between the two regions and stressed the importance of returning displaced people to their homes.

Key points of the agreement include the separation and relocation of Somali and Afar forces, conducting a referendum for residents of disputed towns under the Ethiopian constitution, and transferring security responsibilities for the three previously contested towns to the military.

The formal agreement between the leaders of the Somali and Afar regions holds special significance for the stability and development of the area, with the hope that it will resolve past conflicts and create new opportunities for cooperation and collaboration.

-The Federal Cabinet of Somalia held an emergency meeting this evening, during which they approved the draft law for the establishment of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Boundaries Commission.

In the extraordinary meeting, the cabinet also issued a resolution prohibiting the trade of weapons and military supplies, approving the Policy on Arms, Ammunition, and Military Equipment Procurement.

The resolution bans the trade of weapons in the Federal Republic of Somalia, specifically prohibiting the import, export, manufacture, trade, transfer, or transport of weapons and military supplies.

The prohibition on arms and ammunition trade approved by the cabinet is part of the federal government’s efforts to establish stringent laws, policies, and regulations to control the illegal influx of weapons into the country following the lifting of the arms embargo.

Additionally, the cabinet approved a Defense Agreement between Somalia and Egypt during the meeting.
