AU Security Council officials in Mogadishu to assess Somalia’s security situation

Mogadishu (SD) – Officials from the African Union Security Council arrived in the Somali capital Mogadishu today, to assess the country’s overall security situation.

Members of the African Union Security Council has begun meetings with Somali government officials to discuss the security situation in Somalia.
Director General of the Ministry of Defense Hassan Mohamed Said Samatar Ga’aliye, said the purpose of the delegation’s visit is to assess whether the Somali security forces are ready to take over the country’s security from AMISOM.

“Members of the delegation will meet Wednesday with government officials and security forces, to discuss the security situation in Somalia. ”said the Director General of the Somali Ministry of Defense.
AMISOM troops end their operations in Somalia next year, at a time when Somali Armed Forces do not seem to be able to take over the country’s security needs.

The assessment of the security situation in Somalia and the extent of the capacity of the Somali government forces comes at a time when the Somali government has rejected a security transition proposal from the AU.
