Chairman Abdi Hashi and Deputy PM Mahdi Guled reach agreement on elections

Mogadishu (SD) – The Speaker of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament Abdi Hashi Abdullahi and the Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guled have reached an agreement on the northern regions election dispute.

In a joint statement, the two sides confirmed they had reached an agreement on the dispute over the Northern Electoral Commission and that it had been resolved.

Abdi Hashi and Mahdi Guled agreed to end the long-running dispute over seats from the northern regions, with the chairman of the electoral committee given to Mahdi Guled’s wing, while the deputy chairman and head of security given to Abdi Hashi’s wing.

The Speaker of the Upper House and the Deputy Prime Minister of the country also agreed to end the factionalism between politicians from the Northern regions over the Upper House elections.

The chairman of the Supreme Court, Mr. Bashe Yusuf Ahmed, who is also from Somaliland, played a key role in the agreement.

The new agreement between Abdi Hashi and Mahdi Guled will end the rift between the two sides, and the election of the seats in both houses of parliament from Somaliland is expected to take place soon.
