JIGJIGA (SD) – News from the town of Bambas in the Gursum district of the Somali Regional State of Ethiopia indicate that civilians were killed and wounded today.
The incident took place after clashes between the Liyu Police with local government police and angry residents, at an inauguration of an elected Ugas.
At least seven civilians were reportedly killed and many more were injured, according to eyewitness reports.
One of the clans in the affected area is said to be organizing a ceremony to inaugurate the newly elected traditional leader of the clan.
However, the army intervened, according to locals, and the civilians became angry, leading the Police to opened fire on the civilians.
Somali Region’s Local government officials have not yet commented on the shooting.
