Washington December 20, 2022 (SD) – On Monday, the US House of Representatives committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the Congressional building asked prosecutors to indict former US President Donald Trump on four charges.
The Democratic-led committee’s recommendation that the Justice Department indite a former president marks the first in U.S. history. The request does not compel prosecutors to take action.
The committee recommended that the Justice Department charge Trump with four possible crimes such as obstructing official proceedings of Congress, conspiracy against the United States, making false statements, and aiding or abetting sedition.
Donald Trump accused the commission of “false allegations” which he said were part of an attempt to prevent him from running for president again. The Justice Department declined to comment on the matter.
