Washington (SD) – US Members of Congress asked US administration to renew the temporary protection law (TPS) for Somalis without legal status in the United States.
Us President Joe Biden recently renewed the law for people from Myanmar and Haiti, effective May 25. However, the legal status of the Somalis whose TPS expires on September 17th, remains unclear.
Four members of Congress, including Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar, have signed a letter calling on the Biden administration to extend their TPS for Somalis.
TPS law prevents deportations of people from certain countries deemed too dangerous to return to. Holders of this permit are also given permits, allowing them to work in the United States.
