Denmark donates 3.6 M to support Somalia fight COVID-19

Mogadishu (SD) The Danish government announced $3.6 million in emergency support Somalia’s COVID-19 response.

The World Bank has forecasted lower global remittances to low-income countries such as Somalia, projecting 20% reduction in remittances due to the COVID-19 economic crisis. Somalia has so far recorded 286 COVID-19 cases and 13 deaths.

According to the Danish embassy in Mogadishu, the contribution will benefit the areas of Health, water sanitation and community level responses.

“ The funding will assist poverty prevention efforts and to COVID 19 response in Somalia, we will support the prevention of the spread through water sanitation and hygiene services to the underserved, vulnerable and highly populated settlements, our support will support the local districts and community systems to deal with COVID 19.” Ambassador Mete noted.

On 15th of April, Somali government has reduced taxes by 50% on goods such as rice, dates, flour and oil, in an effort to maintain the cost of living in the country.
