Dispute over presidential adviser’s candidacy heats up

BELEDWEYNE (SD) – Reports from Beledweyne town in HirShabelle region confirm that the security forces loyal to Fahad Yasin Haji Dahir arrived at the airport today.

The sources added that the Somali President’s security advisor and the former NISA Director, is to visit Beledweyne in the coming hours.

President Farmajo’s advisor is running for the HOP086 seat, which has been held by Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir for the past several years, and will be one of the seats to be held on Sunday, May 20th.

The election delegates that could possibly select Fahad Yassin were also deployed to Beledweyne this morning in a heavily fortified area near the AMISOM base 4 in Eljaalle.

Fahad Yasin’s visit coincides with state media reporting that the Federal Electoral Commission has suspended the HOP-86 seat, which was recently announced by the commission.

“”Following the complaints received by the Federal Electoral Commission (FEIT) from the peacekeepers and traditional elders of the sub-constituency of HOP086, the two commissions to this letter are informed to suspend the holding of the above seat until the grievance is resolved.” a FEIT statement said.

However, the move was opposed by the Hirshabelle Electoral Commission, which issued a statement calling the news a hoax and saying that the election will be held on time.

Security has also been tightened in Beledweyne, where HirShabelle President Ali Gudlawe is still in, as Somali national and local forces are deployed in the town.
