Djibouti: IGAD to convene an extra ordinary meeting on Somalia, Ethiopia dispute

DJIBOUTI (SD) – The President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, has convened an extraordinary meeting of the Heads of the IGAD regional block to discuss the situation in the region, especially regarding the controversial maritime agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland.

This agreement stipulated that the two sides would exchange maritime territory to Ethiopia and exchange recognition for Somaliland.

The meeting, scheduled for January 18, is expected to include the participation of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

This development is seen as a response to the recent statement by the Somali government, which urged IGAD member countries to convene an emergency meeting to address the crisis created by Ethiopia’s interference in Somalia’s internal affairs.

Somalia’s diplomatic efforts seem to be yielding some success, garnering support and statements of solidarity from various international actors, demonstrating the international community’s commitment to the unity of Somalia.
