Eastern European countries pledge to evacuation of Somalis in Ukraine

MOGADISHU (SD) – Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdisaid Muse Ali, had a phone conversation about the Somali students who fled from the war in Ukraine, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó.

The Foreign Ministry of Somalia on Tuesday instructed Somalis stranded in Ukraine to cross to Poland, Moldova, Hungary or Slovakia following guarantee of safe passage by those countries.

“Pleasure to speak with H.E Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade of Hungary. Received reassurances that students whose studies in Ukraine have been disrupted will be offered to continue their studies at Hungarian universities with accommodation provided,” said the Minister in a tweet.

Somali Foreign Minister Abdisaid Muse Ali also spoke by telephone with his Serbian counterpart Nikola Selaković, who is also agreed to helping in the evacuation of Somali students fleeing the Ukraine conflict.

Minister Abdisaad Muse Ali added, “We agreed to advance our long-standing bilateral relations and to closely coordinate on matters of mutual interest. Thank you, H.E Nikola Selaković for your support and cooperation.”

The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been working hard since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine to ensure that Somali citizens living in the country are welcomed and reception.
