Ethiopia: Opposition parties in Somali Region boycott elections

Jigjiga (SD) – The Ethiopian Electoral Commission said the final phase of preparations of this month’s elections were underway in various parts of the country.

Ethiopian Regional administrations of Somali, Hareri and other Region that did not participate on the June 21st election held in the Country.

About 22 parties are vying for 47 seats in the federal parliament and a number of local municipality seats.

However, Opposition parties in the Somali Regional State have boycotted the elections, saying they are still concerned about unresolved transparency issues.

Ibrahim Mohamed Hussein, Deputy Chairman of the Justice and Equality Party, told local media that they were worried about the Federal Government’s ability in holding a free and fair elections.

Adding that all 22 registered political parties will not be participating in this month’s elections.
