HARGEISA (SD) – The chairman of Somaliland’s UCID party Eng. Faysal Ali Warabe, along with other party officials, met with senior officials from the international community in Hargeisa last night.
The delegation was led by EU Ambassador to Somalia, Tiina Intelmann, and included the Swedish Ambassador to Kenya Per Lindgärd and EU Political Adviser Maria Groeneveld.
At last night’s meeting, the political situation in the country was discussed and the the UCID Chairman briefed the delegation of the country’s current electoral impasse.
The chairman told the delegation that the opposition are insisting on holding the presidential election on time, November 13 of this year.
He added that the issue of registration of associations was premature and the government is using it to disrupt and postpone the Presidential election.
The EU delegation also met yesterday with Somaliland’s Minister of Interior, who reportedly reiterated the government’s plan to delay the upcoming presidential election.
Opposition parties in Somaliland have called for peaceful demonstrations in support of Somaliland’s democratic process, while the government has banned all forms of protest.
