MOGADISHU (SD) -Further reports have emerged about intense fighting ongoing in the Bardhere district of Gedo region between forces aligned with the Jubaland administration and the Somali federal government.
The conflict began after federal forces withdrew from the district yesterday, leaving positions that were immediately taken over by Jubbaland forces. However, federal troops launched a counterattack this morning against Jubbaland forces.
The battle stems from a dispute over control of the district, with the federal government and Jubbaland appointing competing administrations for Baardheere.
Reports indicate that the heavy fighting is concentrated in the town center, particularly around the district headquarters, where both sides are engaged.
Among the casualties is Mohamed Ilyas Caagane, recently appointed by the federal government as the head of social affairs for the district.
At least five people are confirmed dead, with several others injured, according to Buraale Ibrahim Hussein, a federal-appointed official in Baardheere.
The situation remains tense as both sides are receiving reinforcements, further escalating the crisis in Baardheere district, Gedo region.
The Gedo region has become a battleground between the federal government and Jubaland, with the federal government aiming to conduct direct, one-person-one-vote elections in some districts under its control.
