Former Somali Deputy PM arrested at Egal Airport in Hargeisa

Mogadishu (SD) – Former Somali Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Omar Carte Qalib has been arrested at Hargeisa International Airport as he was returning to the country.

The former deputy prime minister of Somalia has been in Hargeisa since resigning from the Somalia’s upper house and requested a pardon from the president of Somaliland.

Somaliland authorities have not yet commented on the reasons behind the arrest of the former Deputy PM of Somalia in Hargeisa, who went to Hargeisa months ago due to his father’s sickness, he later died.

The arrest of the former Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia comes at a time when President Muse Bihi recently issued a law criminalizing participation in Somalia’s politics and elections.

Sources close to Somaliland Presidency, indicate that the arrested PM is planning to return to Mogadishu, as to run for a seat in the federal parliament.

The sources add that the former Somali Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Omar Carte Qalib’s arrest at Egal Airport in Hargeisa is also linked to holding a Somali diplomatic passport.
