IGAD to support Somalia to lift the arms embargo

Addis Ababa December 02, 2022 (SD) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) clarified to support Somalia’s plans to lift the long-standing arms embargo.

Somalia’s Minister of foreign affairs, Abshir Omar Jama (Huruuse) said at the 48th meeting of IGAD foreign ministers that took place in Khartoum that the arms embargo is an obstacle to his government’s plan to restore peace and stability and also to defeat Al-Shabaab.

The minister also asked IGAD to start campaigns in the UN Security Council again to lift the arms embargo after the Security Council recently rejected to lift the arms embargo on Somalia.

Meanwhile, the ministers of foreign affairs of IGAD agreed that the development projects and leadership opportunities of the IGAD organization should be distributed fairly because Somalia, one of the founding countries of the organization, did not get its rightful share in both in terms of projects and organizational leadership as the Somalia government claimed.
