Indian Navy rescues MV Ruen from Somali Pirates

BOSSASO (SD) -An Indian Navy ship stationed near the Somali coast launched an attack on a vessel called Ruen, which was hijacked in December 2023.

A statement released by the Indian forces mentioned that the vessel Ruen, flying the Maltese flag, had been utilized by pirates to seize other ships, which made it easy for them to seize a big ship from Bangladesh last week.

The Indian military spokesperson did not disclose if there were any casualties in the operation targeting the Ruen vessel, nor did they disclose the number of pirates captured.

The capture of the Ruen vessel marks the first successful hijacking operation since Somali piracy reached its peak in 2017 when international naval forces curtailed the attacks in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.

The recent attempted hijacking comes as Yemen’s Houthi group launched attacks on commercial ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, which they say is a response to Israel’s war on Gaza.
