HARGEISA (SD) – The leaders of Somaliland’s opposition parties UCID and WADDANI, met with a delegation from countries that support democracy and development in Somaliland.
The delegation are from the European Union, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Germany, and discussed with senior Somaliland opposition party officials the political situation in the country and the strengthening of Somaliland’s democratic process.
Opposition parties and the Somaliland government are at odds over the order of the country’s elections.
The government is insisting on holding the party elections prior to the presidential elections, contrary to law, which clearly stipulates that the presidential elections takes place first, according to a recent Supreme Court clarifications.
On the other hand, the delegation, who has been on a working visit to Somaliland in recent days, held similar meetings with members of the Somaliland Senate and House of Representatives on strengthening democracy and elections.
