More than 100 members of Somalia’s Federal Parliament gave an ultimatum to Somalia’s President

MOGADISHU (SD)—More than 100 members from both houses of Somalia’s Federal Parliament have issued a joint statement addressing the country’s tense political situation. The statement clearly expresses deep concern about the nation’s direction and the non-consultative decisions of the National Consultative Council.

The parliamentarians stated that recent decisions from the National Consultative Council did not reflect the general will of political stakeholders, but rather represented decisions made by a single political group alone.

They made clear demands to the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud, to return to the constitutional path of the country and abide by the provisional constitution, to begin genuine national consultations involving all political stakeholders in the country and to immediately withdraw any confrontational measures being taken against Jubaland, to prevent further political disputes and deeper political collapse.

The MPs also warned the government against plunging the country into political, security, and social instability. They stated that if President Hassan Sheikh does not heed these important recommendations, they advise him to honorably resign from his position to save national unity, statehood, and the future of the Somali people.

“We clearly state that all recent political decisions from the National Consultative Council were made by a single political group. If President Hassan Sheikh does not reverse course, we will officially recommend that he resign from office.”

The political dispute between federal government institutions and some of the country’s political stakeholders has reached its peak, with increasing recommendations coming from within Parliament and other political sides. The political crisis in the country continues to escalate.
