Mogadishu (SD) – The process for electing the Upper House seats in the Northern Regions of the Federal Parliament of Somalia has recently been unveiled.
“The Speaker of the Upper House Abdi Hashi Abdillahi and the Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia Mahdi Mohamed Guled considering the Provisional Constitution of Somalia, Indirect election process for the Upper House seats in the Northern Regions in 2016 as the basis for the Upper House seats selection process and the agreements of the National Consultative Forum on 17 September 2020, and 27 May 2021 and 22 August 2021.” Said their joint statement.
Somali Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Mohamed Guled and Speaker of the Upper House Abdi Hashi Abdullahi jointly issued the process for electing seats for the Upper House in the northern regions.
“The Speaker of the Upper House and the Deputy Prime Minister will jointly publish the list of candidates for the 11 seats in the Upper House of Parliament from the Northern Regions. They submit the list to the Somaliland Electoral Commission (SEIT) to determine the timing of the election. The polling station for the Upper House of Parliament from the Northern Provinces will be the Air Force Hanger of Aficiooni.” Said their joint statement.
The two officials also said they would release the list of candidates for the upper house and hand it over to the Northern Electoral Commission.
In the new process, after Abdi Hashi and Mahdi Guled will select the candidates for the Upper House of Somaliland, and then will submit them to Prime Minister Roble.
Speaker of the Upper House Abdi Hashi and Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi Guled reiterated Somaliland’s election process for the Upper House, amid disagreements among senior government officials.
