Opposition warns US oil firms against ‘shady deal’ in Somalia

MOGADISHU (SD) – Somali opposition have told US based oil companies not to sign the “secret” oil agreement with Somali government or to admit at their own risk.

In a letter addressed to Liberty Oil and Coastline Exploration and Coastline Exploration seen by Somali dispatch, a Union of Presidential Candidates which brings together over 12 presidential candidates has warned the companies against the shady deal with Somalia, saying such agreement will never work in the country.

The letter by the Council of Presidential Candidates said the shady deal goes against the Public Procurement Act (2016).

“It is a requirement for the IMCC to review and approve all licensing round tender documentation, including the Model PSA, before a licensing round being launched. This was not done,” the letter said

The leaders of the opposition parties called on the companies to refrain from such deals and wait for till government’s transition period concludes.

“The ongoing licensing process conducted by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources is not compliant with the legal framework of the Federal Government of Somalia, and thus unlawful for any company to Participate,” the opposition said.

The letter dated 3rd of January comes a day after the opposition leaders warned Government against plan to secretly sign oil blocks agreement with tbe two international oil firms,

In another letter sent to President Farmajo, Parliament leadership and the premier, the opposition said inking of the secret deals could risks the country’s debt relief process as well as the trust of the international lenders.
