Hargeisa (SD) – Sabah Abdi Ibrahim, the wife of Prof. Ismail Hurre Bubaa, a former deputy prime minister of Somalia and now a senior member of Wadani opposition party, was arrested in Hargeisa tonight.
Prof Ismail Bubaa was also a senior decorated SNM official who fought against the Siad Barre government and a former Somaliland minister of finance.
Ms. Sabah’s arrest was confirmed to the media by her husband Prof. Ismail Hurre Bubaa.
Bubaa told local media that Police abducted his wife at a medical facility in Hargeisa and left her children at the facility alone.
The senior politician attributes his wife’s “abduction” to recent political comments he made regarding Somali unity.
He also suspects authorities have seen his wife’s similar comments on Somali unity, which are in line with the country’s freedom of expression laws.
Bubaa added that the government is currently working on a plan to arrest him as well, but warned the move could damage the unrecognized country’s reputation.
