Hargeisa(SD) –The members of the Somaliland House of Representatives approved the amendments and supplements to the Associations Act 14/2021, which has been debated by the House in recent days.
Speaker of the Somaliland House of Representatives Bashe Mohamed Farah said the political associations will compete directly at the end of the last six-month of their term, with the top three parties becoming the national parties.
He said that the bill harmonizes the Electoral Act No. 14 and the countries electoral process.
The chairman added special elections without voter registration will be held to pick a three new national parties in 2022.
The House of Representatives approved each amendment separately the Law on the Opening of Political Associations, which allows for opening of new political associations when the current national parties license expires in 2022. 40 MPs approved the bill, 3 MPs rejected.
The pro-Wadani MPs in the House Representatives did not attend today’s parliamentary session, the MPs appeared to be opposed to the passage of the Law, with some saying that Kulmiye MPs who prepared it had a vested interest.
Somaliland will is to hold the long awaited local council and parliamentary elections on May 31st of this year.
