Pres. Bihi calls on the African Union to reconsider its 2005 statement on Somaliland

Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi addressing a ceremony marking the 28th anniversary of the formation of the Somaliland Armed Forces yesterday, sent an appeal message to the African Union.

President Bihi said the people of Somaliland deserve to have their aspirations respected, if not at least to work within their democratic independent national system.

Muse Bihi also said that they are not pressuring African leaders to gain recognition, and that Somaliland was satisfied with the rule of law and colonial borders.

“Our nation is built on the rule of law, we are not violating African law on colonial borders, we are not violating its constitution, we are not at war with anyone. Our brothers are wrong and wants us to join them so we can all burn, ”said Muse Bihi.

President Museveni called on the African Union to refer to the report of a 2005 Somaliland commission of inquiry, which sympathized for Somaliland’s ambitions.

“The Addis Ababa-based African Union needs to look at the facts and the delegation sent in 2005, which confirmed that the issue of Somaliland is different from others in African countries. We appeal to our neighbors and Africa to follow though with their findings, “said the President of the Self-declared Republic of Somaliland, Musa Bihi Abdi.

The call by the Somaliland president comes at a time when Somaliland is facing political challenges in the run-up to this year’s elections.

Somaliland president Muse Bihi is insists on postponing the presidential elections and start registering new parties, contrary to the current electoral law.
