President Bihi and candidate Irro Address election dispute

Berbera (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi spoke for the first time about the dispute over the opening of the organization, strongly opposed by the opposition.

The president who went to Berbera to open the Somaliland games talked about the current political crisis griping the country.

The president urged opposition parties not to see the opening of the Parties as a problem, saying there is not much to discuss.

“No one gets to decide on the opening of the Political associations. We should all follow Law 14 which was passed by both houses of parliament and signed by the President. It will be implemented in May and we will follow the path set by the law.” Said president Bihi.

The president, on the other hand, promised to hold the presidential election on time “The presidential election, a must will be held on time, God willing”.

The president’s statement contradicts arguments by lawmakers in his corner, who support the opening of political parties now.

Meanwhile, Wadani party presidential candidate Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro, who addressed hundreds of supporters at Egal Airport in Hargeisa on his return from a trip abroad, said the opposition would not accept the reopening of associations before the presidential election.

Irro said his party would not recognize Bihi as a President, if he does not hold the presidential election on time, and threatened to run for president.

“Elections must be held on time. We will not allow an extension. We are ready for the opening of the political parties when their legal term for the existence of national parties expires,” Cirro added.

The announcement of the opening of political parties has caused controversy in Somaliland’s House of Representatives, with some MPs fighting for the opening of political parties and others fighting against it.
