Hargeisa (SD) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, officially announced today that the first session of the newly elected Somaliland House of Representatives will take place on August 3rd.
The Supreme Court of Somaliland announced the official results of the March 31,2021 Parliamentary elections on July 7, 2021.
“Considering the importance of the first sitting of the House of Representatives, to take the oath of office, and to elect from among the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in accordance with Clause 3 of Article 44 of the Constitution of the Republic of Somaliland” the Presidential decree said.
Adding “The first session of the newly elected House of Representatives will take place on Tuesday 03/08/2021, at 09:00 am, and will be held at the House of Representatives in the capital of the Republic of Somaliland,”.
In the 24 days since the announcement of the court, there has been a fierce battle between all opposition parties and the ruling party Kulmiye for the leadership of the new Somaliland parliament.
Somaliland’s opposition coalition called on the president numerous times to call the first session of the new parliament, with some accusing the president of postponing the session until his party secured a majority vote for his candidate for speaker.
Six days remain of the 30-day constitutional deadline for the president to convene the first session of the House of Representatives, the 30 day starts from the day the Supreme Court announces the official results of the election.
