HARGEISA (SD) -Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has named seven new members for Somaliland’s Political Party Registration and Approval Committee, which is expected to hold elections in this year.
The terms of the three national parties expire at the end of this year, and the Electoral Law 14 states that associations can be registered six months in advance.
Somaliland’s presidential term precedes those of the parties, and President Bihi is insisting on holding the party elections early.
Both opposition parties strongly oppose the move, which violates the country’s electoral law, marring the unrecognized country’s democratic reputation.
The commission will begin the registration process of political associations in this year, and will approve the party’s that meet the requirements for running as a registered political party.
The two opposition parties have not yet commented on the president’s nomination of the new committee.
