Las Anod March 18, 2023 (SD) – The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, once again addressed the ongoing conflict in the city of Las Anod, in Sool region, which has been going on for more than a month.
President Hassan Sheikh stated that he is deeply concerned about the ongoing conflict between Somaliland and the SSC forces, which has resulted in significant human casualties and material losses.
The President also emphasized that the violence in Las Anod is a collective concern for all Somalis, and there is a need for a comprehensive solution to be found.
He called for dialogue and urged all parties to work towards a peaceful resolution. Furthermore, the President stated that the conflict in Las Anod is a political issue that requires a diplomatic solution, and he is committed to finding a lasting resolution.
The President’s remarks come as fighting erupted once again in Las Anod, in the Sool region, with clashes reported near the Goojacadde military base on the outskirts of the city.
The commanders of both sides claimed victory, with each faction garnering support from their respective media outlets. Somaliland forces displayed several individuals and vehicles they claimed were captured in the battle and confiscated weapons and ammunition of various types.
Similarly, SSC military leaders displayed prisoners and a battle vehicle they claimed to have taken from Somaliland forces.
The battle destroyed parts of Laascaanood, with ongoing clashes causing further displacement and loss of life. There are no independent sources to verify the warring sides’ claims.
