MOGADISHU (SD) – The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamud left suddenly left for Eritrea on a four-day official visit at the invitation of his Eritrean counterpart Isaias Afwerki.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his accompanying delegation arrived in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea this afternoon.
Hassan Sheikh and his delegation were welcomed at Asmara airport by the President of Eritrea and other officials, and Hassan Sheikh was given a warm welcome.
President Hassan Sheikh and President Isaias Afwerki will reportedly hold in-depth talks, there and focusing on bilateral relations and co-operation.
Sources close to Villa Somalia indicated to us that the president’s trip is also related to the returning of Somali soldiers who finished their training in Eritrea two years ago.
Opposition members of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s government, including President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, have claimed that Eritrean-trained Somali troops took part in the fighting in the Tigrean region of northern Ethiopia, a claim the then government denied.
Since taking office, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has embarked on a series of trips abroad aimed at strengthening Somalia’s co-operation with the international community.
