WASHINGTON (SD) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, in an interview with The Washington Post, revealed that there are individuals close to former U.S. President Donald Trump advocating for the formal recognition of Somaliland.
The President noted ongoing efforts in the U.S. aimed at recognizing Somaliland but emphasized Somalia’s strong opposition to this move. He explained that historically, Somaliland was a British protectorate, while the rest of Somalia was under Italian colonial rule, before uniting in 1960 as the Somali Republic.
He highlighted the critical role of U.S. military support in training Somali forces and fighting Al-Shabaab, stressing that continued cooperation is essential for regional peace.
President Hassan Sheikh also mentioned that while Somalia aims to establish a fully capable national army, international assistance is still needed for security. He reiterated that Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab benefits global security by preventing the group, which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda, from expanding its influence into Europe and the U.S.
