UN Office in Somalia in consultations on the feasibility of holding one-person-one-vote elections in Somalia

MOGADISHU (SD) – The UN office in Somalia is conducting meetings with opposition politicians, former officials, and the electoral commission to gather information on the political situation and assess the feasibility of holding one-person-one-vote elections in Somalia.

Former Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble recently announced his meeting with the Acting UN Special Representative for Somalia, James Swan.

In a Facebook post, Roble stated that they discussed Somalia’s unstable political situation, with a particular focus on the contentious issue of one-person-one-vote elections, which the government insists on holding. He emphasized the need for inclusive, free, and fair elections.

A day earlier, James Swan held separate meetings with former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, who is a vocal opposition leader, and the disputed chairperson of the electoral commission, Abdikarin. They discussed the country’s political situation and the organization of elections that would allow citizens to elect leaders who serve their interests.

These meetings by the international community come as President Hassan Sheikh’s government has less than a year and a half remaining in its term. Historically, during politically sensitive periods in Somalia, the international community begins information-gathering meetings and, in cases of escalating political crises, issues binding resolutions to steer the country in a specific direction.
