Mogadishu (SD) – The Heritage Institute for Political Studies has appointed Prof. Afyare Elmi as its new head, following the recent resignation of Abdirashid Khalif Hashi, who had held the post for six years.

“The Board of Directors of the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies (HIPS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Afyare Abdi Elmi, a political scientist and an academic, as the new Executive Director of the institute, effective 1 June 2021” said Heritage Institute in a released statement.

“In choosing Prof. Elmi from among many qualified candidates through an internal selection process, the Board of Directors has settled on a respected scholar of peacebuilding and state building with a focus on Somalia. Prof. Elmi has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Institute since its establishment in 2013, and he has made a significant contribution to the institute’s publications over the years” the statement added.

Afyare Eli received his higher education in Canada but was currently teaching political science at Doha University.

“Dr. Elmi holds a PhD in political science from the University of Alberta (Canada), an MA in politics from Brock University (Canada), another MA in education from University of Toronto (Canada) and a BA in public administration from Ryerson University (Canada).” Heritage stated.

The Heritage Institute’s Board of Trustees, whose role is to provide strategic oversight and guidance to the Institute’s leadership and management, welcomed the role of Dr Afyare, a senior scholar who has been instrumental in security research for the past 12 years.

“At a time when Somalia and the broader Horn of Africa region are beset by multiple political, security and humanitarian crisis, the Heritage Institute’s role in fostering dialogue among key stakeholders and informing public policy is ever more needed. To that end, Prof. Elmi brings unique and relevant qualifications to the role, given his in-depth understanding of regional dynamics and his academic rigor.” Said Heritage Institute.

Prof Afyare will take up the post on June 1, 2021, with Mursal Saney, the current deputy Director, as the acting director of the Heritage Institute.
